What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are extremely thin ceramic coverings that are bonded to the teeth, and they can be used to improve the appearance of the smile in every possible way.
What Is the Procedure Like?
When you come in for porcelain veneers, the process will start with a consultation with Dr. Burdusi or Dr. Ward. During this, you’ll get a chance to discuss what you would like to accomplish, and we encourage you to even bring pictures of the kind of smile you want. After determining that you are a good candidate for veneers, your cosmetic dentist will start the procedure by gently removing a small part of your teeth’s enamel. This will help create room in your smile so your veneers can lay flat. After this, they’ll take an impression of your smile and send it to a dental lab.
You’ll then return for a second visit where the veneers will be bonded to your teeth and any final adjustments can be made. After that, you’re finished! With the proper maintenance (consisting of brushing, flossing, and regular checkups), your veneers should look great for at least 10 years or more.

Are Porcelain Veneers Permanent?
Yes! This is one of the great benefits of porcelain veneers. For most patients looking to transform their smile, they want a permanent solution. Hiding stains, discoloration, or even minor cracks is something you want to keep hidden for many years, which is why so many people opt for porcelain veneers. While your veneers won’t last forever, you can expect them to last, on average, 10 years or more.
Will My Regular Teeth be Affected?
It does require a small portion of your tooth enamel to be removed. Your dentist in Federal Hill will need to “prepare” your teeth before having your veneers placed, which means removing some of the enamel so the veneer will lay flat and properly adhere to your natural tooth.
Does it Hurt to Have Veneers Placed?
Depending on your discussion with Dr. Burdusi or Dr. Ward, you may or may not receive sedation or anesthesia during your first appointment. Everyone is different and some can handle a small amount of discomfort better than others. You should know that our main goal is to keep you comfortable and at ease, so if we feel you will benefit from sedation or anesthesia during the procedure, we will administer it.
What Should I Do if a Veneer Comes Off?
If a veneer comes off, don’t panic. Try to stay calm and if possible, retrieve the veneer or portion that broke off. Depending on the severity of the problem, or whether the entire veneer broke off or just part of it, will determine if we can fix the problem. Sometimes, it is as simple as re-bonding the veneer. Other times, it may require the entire veneer be replaced.
How Much Do Veneers Cost?
Do not expect your veneers to cost the same as a friend or colleague who has had them placed. There are many factors that determine the overall price, including:
- The number of veneers being placed
- The state of your oral health prior to placement and if any dental work needs to be completed
- The material used
- The type of veneer (porcelain veneers or Lumineers)
- Anesthesia or sedation
You will receive an estimated cost during your initial consultation with us.
